The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable

What it means

Windows found a file it needs for the update but the file system could not read it intact.

Common causes

• File system damage after a crash or power loss
• A failing drive
• Faulty RAM corrupting the file copy

How to fix it

1. Run chkdsk C: /f in Terminal (Admin) and let it run at the next restart.
2. Reset the update cache: in Terminal (Admin) run net stop wuauserv, net stop bits, rename C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old, then net start wuauserv and net start bits.
3. Open Terminal (Admin) and run sfc /scannow, then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Restart afterwards.
4. Run Windows Memory Diagnostic if it keeps returning on different files.
