Installation failed

What it means

A generic install failure. Since 2024 it often shows for a Recovery (WinRE) update when the recovery partition is too small.

Common causes

• Recovery partition too small for a WinRE update
• A damaged .NET or Defender update
• Interrupted install

How to fix it

1. Restart and try once more: many 0x80070643 failures are one-offs.
2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter: Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update.
3. If it is a WinRE update (KB number with "Windows Recovery Environment"), follow Microsoft's guide to resize the recovery partition or skip it: it does not affect normal use.
