The remote procedure call failed

What it means

An update helper could not talk to the Windows service that installs it, usually because that service crashed or is stopped.

Common causes

• The Windows Update or RPC service stopped
• A damaged update cache
• Antivirus blocking service communication

How to fix it

1. In services.msc, set Remote Procedure Call, Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer Service to their defaults and start them.
2. Reset the update cache: in Terminal (Admin) run net stop wuauserv, net stop bits, rename C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old, then net start wuauserv and net start bits.
3. Open Terminal (Admin) and run sfc /scannow, then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth. Restart afterwards.
