The server name or address could not be resolved

What it means

Windows Update could not turn the update host name into an IP address, so the download never starts.

Common causes

• A DNS server that is unreachable or wrong
• A VPN or proxy changing DNS
• A hosts file entry blocking Microsoft domains

How to fix it

1. Flush DNS: run ipconfig /flushdns in Terminal, then reload the page.
2. Set the adapter to use 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 as DNS and retry.
3. Check C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts for entries pointing at Microsoft update domains.
