What it means

The update download connected and then dropped mid-transfer, which points at the network path rather than at the update itself.

Common causes

• An unstable Wi-Fi or VPN connection
• A firewall or antivirus scanning the download and killing it
• A proxy that times out on large files

How to fix it

1. Use a wired connection or a stable network and rerun the update.
2. Reset the update cache: in Terminal (Admin) run net stop wuauserv, net stop bits, rename C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old, then net start wuauserv and net start bits.
3. Pause the antivirus web shield for one download to see whether it is the one cutting the connection.
