Component store is missing an assembly

What it means

Windows Update refers to a component that is no longer in the component store, so the update cannot be applied.

Common causes

• The component store was cleaned too aggressively
• A failed update removed files
• A tweak tool deleted WinSxS content

How to fix it

1. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then sfc /scannow, and restart.
2. Reset the update cache: in Terminal (Admin) run net stop wuauserv, net stop bits, rename C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old, then net start wuauserv and net start bits.
3. Install the update manually from the Microsoft Update Catalog if it has a standalone package.
4. If the store cannot be repaired, use an in-place upgrade with the same Windows version.
