The server execution failed

What it means

Windows could not start the COM server that performs the update, so the request failed before it reached the network.

Common causes

• A COM or DCOM registration that is broken
• The Windows Update service failing to start
• A third-party tool that disabled system services

How to fix it

1. Run services.msc and set Windows Update, Background Intelligent Transfer Service and Cryptographic Services to Manual, then start them.
2. Reset the update cache: in Terminal (Admin) run net stop wuauserv, net stop bits, rename C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old, then net start wuauserv and net start bits.
3. If the services refuse to start, run SFC /scannow followed by DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.
