Update could not be installed

What it means

The update failed while installing, often because a reserved partition is too small or the Microsoft servers were unreachable.

Common causes

• VPN or proxy blocking the update server
• System Reserved partition is full
• .NET Framework features failing to enable

How to fix it

1. Disconnect any VPN or proxy and try again.
2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter: Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update.
3. Reset the update cache: in Terminal (Admin) run net stop wuauserv, net stop bits, rename C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old, then net start wuauserv and net start bits.
4. Try the update with the Windows Update Assistant or the Media Creation Tool (keeps your files and apps).
