Update failed to download

What it means

The download stopped before it finished, often because the connection dropped or the update cache is in a bad state.

Common causes

• Unstable connection or a proxy
• A corrupt update cache
• Too little free disk space

How to fix it

1. Free at least 20 GB on C:, then retry.
2. Reset the update cache: in Terminal (Admin) run net stop wuauserv, net stop bits, rename C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old, then net start wuauserv and net start bits.
3. Disable the proxy or VPN for the download, then check Windows Update again.
4. If one update keeps failing, download it from the Microsoft Update Catalog and install it by hand.
