Update search failed

What it means

Windows Update could not finish searching for updates.

Common causes

• A filter or DNS blocklist on update domains
• Damaged update cache

How to fix it

1. Pause DNS filters and VPNs.
2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter: Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update.
3. Reset the update cache: in Terminal (Admin) run net stop wuauserv, net stop bits, rename C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old, then net start wuauserv and net start bits.
