The update server returned a 404

What it means

Windows Update asked for a specific update file and the server said it does not exist, usually a stale catalogue entry.

Common causes

• A WSUS server that no longer holds the package
• A Microsoft catalogue entry that was replaced
• A proxy rewriting the request

How to fix it

1. Reset the update cache: in Terminal (Admin) run net stop wuauserv, net stop bits, rename C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old, then net start wuauserv and net start bits.
2. Install the current cumulative update from the Microsoft Update Catalog instead of relying on the stale entry.
3. On a managed PC, ask IT to re-approve the update on the WSUS server.
