Recovery failed, no boot device
What it means
Windows could not read the boot files or the device they live on, so recovery stopped before it started.
Common causes
- The boot drive is loose or failing
- A half-finished update
- Damaged boot configuration
How to fix it
- Start from a Windows USB stick: Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair.
- Check the drive cable and the BIOS: is the Windows drive listed at all?
- Run
bootrec /fixmbr,bootrec /fixbootandbootrec /rebuildbcdfrom the recovery command prompt. - If it still fails, restore a system image or install Windows again after copying your files.
