The required file could not be read from disk

What it means

Windows tried to load a boot file and the read never completed, which is a disk or controller problem rather than a configuration one.

Common causes

• A drive that is failing or has bad sectors
• A loose SATA or NVMe connection
• A controller mode changed in the BIOS

How to fix it

1. Start the PC from the Windows install stick or recovery drive, then choose Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
2. Run chkdsk C: /f /r and note whether it repairs errors.
3. Reseat the drive and cable, then check the SATA mode in the BIOS matches what Windows was installed with.
