Boot configuration data missing
What it means
The Windows Boot Manager is there, but its store (BCD) cannot be read, so it does not know what to start.
Common causes
- A deleted or damaged BCD store
- An update or cloning tool changed the partitions
- A failing boot drive
How to fix it
- Boot from a Windows USB stick and open Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Command Prompt.
- Run
bootrec /rebuildbcdand accept the Windows installation it finds. - On a UEFI PC, also run
bcdboot C:\Windows /s S: /f UEFIwith S: as the EFI partition, if you are comfortable in diskpart. - Check the drive's health before trusting it with another install.
