The licence could not be validated

What it means

Windows reached the activation service but the key or licence does not match the installed edition or the hardware.

Common causes

• A key for another Windows edition
• A hardware change after a digital licence
• The key is blocked or already used

How to fix it

1. Run slmgr /dlv and compare the edition with the key you entered.
2. Re-enter the key with slmgr /ipk <key> and activate with slmgr /ato.
3. If the key came with the PC, use the activation troubleshooter under Settings > System > Activation.
4. If it still fails, contact Microsoft support with the licence proof.
