Excel could not complete the operation

What it means

A generic Excel error: the action failed because of the file, a permission, an add-in or a macro.

Common causes

• The file is open in another program or read-only
• An add-in or macro is failing
• The workbook is damaged

How to fix it

1. Close the file everywhere, including OneDrive previews and other PCs, then reopen it.
2. Start Excel in safe mode: excel.exe /safe and repeat the action.
3. Disable add-ins, then open the file with macros disabled.
4. Open a copy and use File > Info > Check for Issues if the workbook is damaged.
