Default printer could not be set

What it means

Windows could not save which printer should be the default, usually because the printer registration is duplicated or damaged.

Common causes

• The same printer installed twice with different drivers
• A permissions problem on the printer settings
• A stuck spooler after an update

How to fix it

1. Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and set the default there, not in the old Control Panel.
2. Remove duplicate entries for the same printer, keeping the one that works.
3. Restart the print spooler: in Terminal (Admin) run net stop spooler, delete the files in C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS, then net start spooler.
4. If it still fails, remove the printer and add it again.
