Add a Second Time Zone Clock to the Taskbar

Windows carries two extra clocks next to the system time, useful for a team in another zone or for a client abroad. The setting lives in the old date and time applet and survives reboots.

by@guidox updated:11/01/26 time:5 min level:Beginner tested on:Windows 11 24H2 works on:Windows 10, Windows 11 tools:Control Panel, Registry Editor
TL;DR

Open **timedate.cpl**, go to **Additional Clocks**, tick two entries with a display name, then hover the taskbar clock. The values are stored per user in the registry.

Before you start

Requirements

  • A normal user account
  • 5 minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

Open the right applet

Settings shows the time zone but not the extra clocks. **timedate.cpl** is the applet with the Additional Clocks tab, and it still works on Windows 11.

timedate.cpl
Get-TimeZone | Select-Object Id,DisplayName,BaseUtcOffset
Get-Date
02

Add the two extra zones

Windows allows exactly two additional clocks. Each needs a tick, a zone and a display name, which is the label shown in the hover popup.

# Additional Clocks tab
# tick 'Show this clock', pick the zone, set the display name
# repeat for the second clock, then Apply
Get-TimeZone -ListAvailable | Where-Object DisplayName -like '*Tokyo*'
03

Check the result without waiting for a hover

Hovering the clock shows the extra times under the date. The same values are readable from the registry, which is the faster way to confirm the setting took.

$k = 'HKCU:\Control Panel\International\User Profile'
Get-ItemProperty $k | Select-Object Clock1,Clock2
Get-ItemPropertyValue $k -Name 'Clock1' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
04

Set the same zones on a second machine

The values are two strings under one registry key. Copying them is faster than clicking through the applet on a new PC.

$src = Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Control Panel\International\User Profile'
Set-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Control Panel\International\User Profile' -Name Clock1 -Value $src.Clock1
Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Control Panel\International\User Profile' | Select-Object Clock1,Clock2
05

Fix the clock when the zone is wrong

An extra clock follows the zone you pick, not the system zone. If the time is off by a whole hour, the zone is wrong; if it is off by minutes, the system clock is drifting.

Set-TimeZone -Id 'W. Europe Standard Time'
w32tm /resync
Get-TimeZone | Select-Object Id,BaseUtcOffset
06

Show seconds or a 24-hour clock as well

The taskbar format comes from the regional settings, not from the extra clocks. A registry value adds seconds, and the short time pattern decides 24-hour display.

reg add "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced" /v ShowSecondsInSystemClock /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
taskkill /f /im explorer.exe
start explorer.exe
Troubleshooting

Common issues

The clock hover shows only the date

No additional clock is ticked. Open timedate.cpl and check the Show this clock box for at least one entry.

The extra clock shows the wrong hour

The zone was picked from a similar name. Compare the BaseUtcOffset from Get-TimeZone -ListAvailable with the offset you expect.

The change did not survive a reboot

The registry key is per user. A different account has its own clocks, and a roaming profile can overwrite the value at logon.

Seconds vanished after an update

Feature updates sometimes reset Explorer settings. Write the ShowSecondsInSystemClock value again and restart Explorer.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Can I add a third clock?

Not with the built-in applet. A widget or the clock app covers more zones, but the taskbar hover stays at two.

Do the extra clocks sync automatically?

Yes, they follow the system time and the chosen zone. Daylight saving is handled by the zone data.

Does this change the system time zone?

No. It only adds labels to the popup; the machine keeps its own zone.

How to undo this

Open timedate.cpl, clear both Show this clock boxes, and apply. Delete the ShowSecondsInSystemClock value if you added it.
