Back Up Every Driver Before a Reinstall

The network and storage drivers decide whether a fresh install can reach the internet. Export them first and the reinstall stops being a scavenger hunt.

TL;DR

Export the third-party drivers with **pnputil /export-driver**, keep the folder on a second drive or USB stick, and reinstall them with **/add-driver /install** after the new install.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Admin terminal
  • A USB stick
  • Ten minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

Export to a folder that survives

The export writes every third-party driver package as an inf and its files. Point it at a USB stick or a second drive, never at the system drive you are about to format.

pnputil /export-driver * D:\riverBackup
02

Check that the folder is not empty

An OEM image with drivers baked into the store can export very little. Count the folders and open the network adapter package specifically.

tipIf the network driver is missing, add the vendor download to the same folder before you wipe anything.
03

Note the exact model and firmware

The export does not include the firmware. Write down the board or laptop model and the installed firmware version so you can find the matching vendor package later.

04

Reinstall from the folder

After the clean install, point pnputil at the folder with the recursive switch. Windows installs every matching package in one pass instead of one dialog per device.

pnputil /add-driver D:\riverBackup\.inf /subdirs /install
05

Reboot before judging devices

Some packages only bind after a restart, and the network adapter often needs one. Reboot before you install anything else.

⚠ warningInstalling three driver versions for the same device leaves the newest one active but the others in the store. Only the active version matters.
06

Keep the folder with the installer

Store the export next to your Windows installer USB. The pair answers the two questions a reinstall raises: how do I boot, and how do I get online.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

pnputil reports no drivers found

The wildcard needs quoting in PowerShell. Run it from Command Prompt or quote the asterisk.

The export fails with access denied

Start the terminal as administrator. The driver store is protected.

A device still has no driver after the reinstall

The package was never in the store. Download it from the vendor on another machine.

The network does not work after install

Install the network package first, from the folder, with the /install switch.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does this include Windows built-in drivers?

No. Only third-party packages are exported, which is what you need.

Can I use the folder on another PC?

Yes for the same model. Different hardware simply finds no match.

How to undo this

Nothing changes on the running system. Delete the export folder when the machine is stable; the drivers stay installed.
