Bring Back a Laptop That Stays Black After Sleep

TL;DR

Try **Ctrl+Alt+Del**, then a short power-button press, then a hard reset. After the reboot, check **powercfg /lastwake** and the display driver's power settings.

Instructions

01

Wake it in the right order

A black screen with a responsive disk is often only the display. **Ctrl+Alt+Del** forces a redraw, and a short power press sends a proper wake event instead of a reset.

# press Ctrl+Alt+Del once
# press the power button for one second, not five
Get-CimInstance Win32_OperatingSystem | Select-Object LastBootUpTime
powercfg /lastwake
02

Hard reset and read the record

A hard reset is the last resort, but it does leave a record. Event **41** with no bugcheck tells you the machine never completed the wake.

# hold the power button for 10 seconds, then start again
Get-WinEvent -FilterHashtable @{LogName='System';Id=41,107,42} -MaxEvents 10 | Select-Object TimeCreated,Id,ProviderName,Message | Format-List
powercfg /a
03

Check the wake source and the device

**powercfg /lastwake** names the device that woke the machine. A graphics or chipset device that cannot resume leaves the screen black while the system runs.

powercfg /lastwake
powercfg /devicequery wake_armed
Get-PnpDevice -Class Display,USB | Where-Object Status -ne 'OK' | Select-Object FriendlyName,Status,Problem
Get-CimInstance Win32_VideoController | Select-Object Name,DriverVersion,DriverDate
04

Turn off the display's own power saving

A monitor or panel that powers down its input needs a moment the driver does not give it. Disabling the display's power saving on wake is the standard fix.

Get-NetAdapterPowerManagement -Name 'Wi-Fi' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object AllowComputerToTurnOffDevice
Get-ItemProperty 'HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers' | Select-Object TdrLevel,TdrDelay
Get-ItemProperty 'HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Video' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object * -ExcludeProperty PS*
05

Update the firmware and the graphics driver

Wake failures are usually fixed in the platform firmware or the graphics driver, not in Windows. Check both before changing power settings.

Get-CimInstance Win32_BIOS | Select-Object SMBIOSBIOSVersion,ReleaseDate
Get-CimInstance Win32_VideoController | Select-Object Name,DriverVersion,DriverDate
Get-CimInstance Win32_PnPSignedDriver | Where-Object DeviceClass -eq 'DISPLAY' | Select-Object DeviceName,DriverVersion,DriverDate
06

Test the new state three times

One successful wake proves little. Three cycles with a working screen and a network connection is the evidence that the change held.

for ($i=1; $i -le 3; $i++) { rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0; Start-Sleep -Seconds 25; Get-CimInstance Win32_OperatingSystem | Select-Object LastBootUpTime; Get-NetAdapter -Name 'Wi-Fi' | Select-Object Status }
powercfg /lastwake
Troubleshooting

Common issues

Nothing wakes it but a hard reset

The firmware is stuck in the suspend path. Update the BIOS, and disable fast startup as a test.

The screen stays black but the disk runs

The display driver failed to resume. A graphics driver update or a lower refresh rate after wake fixes it.

It wakes but the network is gone

A separate adapter power problem. Check the adapter's power management and the driver.

It happens only on battery

A power setting for the battery profile differs. Compare the AC and DC values with powercfg /query.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does disabling fast startup help?

It changes the shutdown path, not the sleep path. It helps when the problem is a stale state from a hybrid shutdown.

Is hibernation a workaround?

Yes. Hibernate writes to disk and restores from a known state, which sidesteps the resume bug.

Can a USB device prevent wake?

A device that fails to re-enumerate can block the resume. Unplug docks and hubs as a test.

How to undo this

Re-enable any power saving you turned off, and roll back the driver with Device Manager if the new one made the problem worse.
