Clean Install Windows 11 and Keep the Digital Licence

A clean install removes years of leftovers, and the licence is tied to the hardware, not to the disk. The preparation decides whether it takes an evening or a weekend.

by@guidox updated:10/31/26 time:90 min level:Advanced tested on:Windows 11 24H2 works on:Windows 10, Windows 11 tools:USB stick, External backup drive
TL;DR

Link the licence to your **Microsoft account** or note the **product key**, copy your files off, boot from the **installer USB**, then skip the key prompt and let activation find the hardware. The system drive is wiped, so the backup must be complete first.

Before you start

Requirements

  • An 8 GB USB stick
  • A full backup
  • An hour
Step by step

Instructions

01

Confirm the licence is recoverable

An OEM machine carries the key in the firmware and activates itself after a clean install. A retail or upgrade licence is easier to manage when it is linked to a Microsoft account; check the activation page for the current state.

Settings > System > Activation
⚠ warningA licence that came with a cheap key reseller may refuse to reactivate after a mainboard change. Note the key before you wipe anything.
02

Write down the hardware-specific drivers

The network adapter is the one that matters: without it you cannot install anything after the reboot. Download the chipset, network and storage drivers to the same USB stick.

03

Build the installer USB

The media creation tool writes a current image with the correct boot files. A stick formatted by hand with an ISO copy often refuses to boot on newer firmware.

04

Copy the files you actually need

Documents, photos, browser profiles, game saves and licence files. Program files do not transfer; reinstalling them is faster than repairing them.

tipCheck the backup by opening a few files from the external drive. An unverified backup is a hope, not a plan.
05

Boot from the stick and delete the partitions

Enter the boot menu, start setup, choose the custom path and remove every partition on the system drive. Setup recreates what it needs and leaves other drives untouched.

⚠ warningDisconnect every other drive before this step. The installer numbers disks by detection order, and a wrong deletion costs a data drive.
06

Skip the key and verify activation

Choose the option without a key, pick the correct edition and finish. After the first online connection Windows activates against the hardware hash.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

Activation fails after the install

Wrong edition, no internet, or a hardware change. Run the activation troubleshooter and select the hardware-change option.

The installer does not see the drive

A storage driver, or RAID mode in the firmware. Load the driver from the stick or switch the controller to AHCI.

Windows asks for a key and refuses to skip

The edition in the image does not match the licence. Use the same edition or the generic key for your edition.

The machine boots straight back into setup

The USB is first in the boot order. Remove it after the first restart.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Do I lose my files?

Everything on the system drive. Other drives stay as they are, which is why the backup covers the system drive completely.

Is a clean install better than a reset?

It removes more, including partition-level leftovers. A reset is faster when you want to keep the recovery partition.

How to undo this

There is no undo; the system drive is rewritten. Keep the old drive or its image until the new install is verified, and restore the backup from the external drive afterwards.
