Clear Stale Bluetooth Pairings That Will Not Reconnect

A headset that pairs but never connects is half-paired on both ends. Remove the device node, reset the headset, and stop the radio from being powered down.

by@guidox updated:10/31/26 time:20 min level:Beginner tested on:Windows 11 24H2 works on:Windows 10, Windows 11 tools:Device Manager, PowerShell as administrator
TL;DR

Remove the device in **Settings**, delete the leftover node in **Device Manager** with hidden devices shown, restart **bthserv**, reset the headset's own pairing, then re-pair.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Admin rights for the service steps
  • The device and its manual
  • 20 minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

Read the devices and their real state

**Get-PnpDevice** shows devices that Settings no longer lists. A device with an error status is present but not working, which is different from not present at all.

Get-PnpDevice -Class Bluetooth | Select-Object FriendlyName,Status,InstanceId
Get-PnpDevice -Class AudioEndpoint | Select-Object FriendlyName,Status | Select-Object -First 10
02

Remove the pairing through Settings

The supported removal writes the pairing away on both the adapter and the profile. Anything you do in Device Manager first is only cosmetic.

:: Settings > Bluetooth & devices > three dots > Remove device
start ms-settings:bluetooth
03

Delete the leftover node

Device Manager hides non-present devices by default, and those are exactly the stale entries. Show them, then uninstall the node with its driver removed from the list.

Get-PnpDevice -Class Bluetooth | Where-Object Status -eq 'Unknown' | Select-Object FriendlyName,InstanceId
pnputil /remove-device "BTHENUM\{0000110b-0000-1000-8000-00805F9B34FB}_LOCALMFG&0000\7&1A2B3C4D&0&000000000000_00000000"
⚠ warningRemove one specific device by instance ID. A blanket filter over the class can take the adapter itself with it.
04

Restart the two services that hold the stack

**bthserv** owns the adapter, **BTAGService** the audio gateway. A restart clears the state without touching drivers.

Get-Service bthserv,BTAGService | Select-Object Name,Status,StartType
Restart-Service bthserv -Force
Start-Service BTAGService -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
05

Reset the pairing on the device itself

Most headsets remember the last host and refuse a new pairing until that memory is cleared. The reset is model-specific and usually a long press on the power or pairing button.

:: typical patterns
:: hold power + pairing for 5-10 s until a double blink
:: or hold the multifunction button while plugging in the charger
tipCheck the manual for the exact sequence. A device still bonded to a phone connects there first and never shows up on the PC.
06

Re-pair and stop the radio from sleeping

Power management on the adapter is the reason a working headset drops every ten minutes. Unchecking the save-power option fixes it for good.

Get-PnpDevice -Class Bluetooth | Where-Object FriendlyName -match 'Adapter|Radio' | Select-Object FriendlyName,InstanceId
:: Device Manager > Bluetooth adapter > Properties > Power Management > clear 'Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power'
Troubleshooting

Common issues

There is no Bluetooth toggle at all

The radio is off in firmware or the driver is missing. Check the BIOS setting and Device Manager for an unknown device before buying a dongle.

The headset connects but only as hands-free

The stereo endpoint is missing or disabled. Enable the headphones endpoint under Sound settings and set it as default.

Re-pairing fails at the last step

The device is still bonded to another host, often a phone in the same room. Turn that host's Bluetooth off during pairing.

Audio cuts out when Wi-Fi is busy

The 2.4 GHz band is shared with Bluetooth. Move the PC to the 5 GHz network or a wired connection.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Do I lose anything by removing a device?

Only the pairing and its per-device settings. Re-pairing restores the connection, and Windows re-creates the audio endpoints.

Why does it drop every few minutes?

Usually the adapter's power saving or an interfering 2.4 GHz network. Both are fixed without reinstalling drivers.

How to undo this

Nothing to undo beyond the removal itself: pair the device again in Settings, and re-tick the adapter's power management option if you cleared it. Service restarts are temporary.
