Compress a Folder With NTFS Compression Without Breaking Apps

NTFS compression is transparent and free, and it is the wrong choice for a folder of active databases. Knowing where it fits is the whole trick.

by@guidox updated:10/31/26 time:15 min level:Beginner tested on:Windows 11 24H2 works on:Windows 10, Windows 11 tools:NTFS volume
TL;DR

Right-click the folder, **Properties > Advanced > Compress contents**, and apply it to the folder only. Use it for logs, archives and old documents, never for program folders or virtual disks.

Before you start

Requirements

  • An NTFS volume
  • Ten minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

Confirm the volume is NTFS

The compression option only exists on NTFS. On exFAT or FAT32 the checkbox is absent, and a network share behaves according to the server.

02

Compress the folder, not the whole drive

Whole-drive compression slows every write and buys little. A targeted folder of text and logs compresses well and the impact stays local.

Properties > Advanced > Compress contents to save disk space
tipAlready compressed formats such as photos, video and zip files gain almost nothing. Check the content type before applying it.
03

Apply to the folder only

The dialog asks whether to apply the change to subfolders and files. New files in the folder inherit the setting either way, which is what you want.

04

Keep program folders out of it

Compressed executables add processor work to every launch and can confuse installers that check free space. Leave Program Files and game folders alone.

⚠ warningDo not compress a virtual machine disk or a database file. Random-access writes on a compressed file are the worst case for this feature.
05

Read the real saving

The properties dialog shows size and size on disk side by side. The difference is the actual saving, and it is often smaller than people expect.

06

Compare with the compact tool

The built-in compact command with the xpress algorithms compresses better than the classic NTFS mode. It is a terminal tool and works on a folder tree.

compact /c /s:\olderName\.*
Troubleshooting

Common issues

The option is greyed out

The volume is not NTFS, or the file is encrypted. Encryption and compression are mutually exclusive.

The folder grew after compression

Small files with many attributes can expand. Check the size on disk column.

An app fails after compressing

Uncompress the folder. Some installers and updaters reject compressed files.

Compression turns itself off

A new file arrived through a copy that reset attributes. Reapply to the folder.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does this slow the machine down?

Only when reading or writing inside the folder. The processor handles it in the background.

Is it a backup?

No. Compression saves space on the same disk and protects nothing.

How to undo this

Clear **Compress contents to save disk space** in the same dialog and apply it to the folder and everything inside. Files expand back to their original size.
