Delay the next Windows feature update without losing security patches

Stay on Windows 11 25H2 while still receiving monthly security fixes, using the official pause and target-version controls.

TL;DR

Use **Windows Update settings** to pause feature updates and set a **target release version** of 25H2. Monthly **quality updates** keep arriving.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Windows 11 25H2 (Home, Pro, Enterprise or Education)
  • Administrator account
  • For Pro/Enterprise: access to Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc)
Step by step

Instructions

01

Decide which delay tier fits you

There are three realistic choices and each one still receives security patches. Pick the lightest one that solves your problem.

Budget tier: Pause updates for up to 5 weeks (Settings)
Sweet spot: Set TargetReleaseVersion to 25H2 (Registry or GPO)
No-compromise: Managed via WSUS / Intune (business only)
02

What actually controls feature updates

Two settings matter: the **Pause updates** switch in Settings, and the **TargetReleaseVersion** policy. Everything else - metered connections, scheduled restarts, active hours - is marketing for a workaround; it does not block a feature update cleanly.

Matters: Pause updates, TargetReleaseVersion = 25H2
Ignore: Metered connection, active hours, 'Get the latest as soon as available' toggle
⚠ warningNever disable the Windows Update service to block upgrades - you lose security patches too.
03

Pause for a short delay

Open **Settings > Windows Update** and click **Pause for 1 week**. You can repeat this up to five times for roughly five weeks total. This blocks both feature and quality updates during the pause, so only use it as a short holdover.

Settings -> Windows Update -> Pause for 1 week

Pin to Windows 11 25H2 with TargetReleaseVersion

This is the clean solution. It tells Windows: give me quality updates for 25H2, do not offer 26H2. On Pro/Enterprise use **gpedit.msc** under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage updates offered from Windows Update > Select the target feature update version. On Home, set the same values via the registry.

reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate" /v TargetReleaseVersion /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate" /v TargetReleaseVersionInfo /t REG_SZ /d "25H2" /f
reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate" /v ProductVersion /t REG_SZ /d "Windows 11" /f
tipRun the commands from an elevated PowerShell or Command Prompt. Reboot once after setting them.
05

Verify you still get security patches

After applying the policy, open **Settings > Windows Update** and click **Check for updates**. You should see monthly cumulative updates (KB numbers starting with KB50) continue to install. Only the feature update to 26H2 is held back.

What to skip

Skip third-party "update blocker" utilities. They usually disable the Windows Update service, which also stops security patches and Defender definitions. Skip the "Show or hide updates" troubleshooter trick - it does not persist across reboots on current builds.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

Windows Update still shows '26H2 is ready'

Confirm TargetReleaseVersion is set to 1 and TargetReleaseVersionInfo is exactly 25H2 (string, no spaces). Reboot, then re-check.

Quality updates stopped arriving too

You probably paused updates on top of the policy. Open Settings > Windows Update and click Resume updates.

gpedit.msc missing on Home

Group Policy Editor is Pro-only. Use the registry keys in the pin step instead.

FAQ

Frequently asked

How long can I stay on 25H2?

Until its support window ends. Microsoft publishes the end-of-service date for each release on its Windows lifecycle page; check it before you set a long delay.

Will I still get Defender updates?

Yes. Defender definitions are separate from feature updates and keep flowing.

Can I undo this when I want 26H2?

Yes. Delete the three registry values or set the policy back to Not Configured, reboot, and the update will be offered.

How to undo this

Open an elevated PowerShell and delete the three policy values, then reboot. After reboot, Windows Update will offer the newest feature update as normal.
