Confirm the external display works first
Resolution, refresh rate and cable all matter before the internal panel is switched off. Test the monitor in extended mode, then remove the internal display from the equation.
Win + P
A docked laptop with the lid closed should drive the external display and nothing else. The lid action and the projection mode are two different settings.
Set the **projection mode** to **Second screen only**, then set the **lid close action** to **Do nothing** on mains power. Changing one without the other either blanks both screens or keeps the internal panel awake.

Win + P
The projection menu has four modes and only one disables the internal panel. This is a session setting; it survives a reconnect but not always a reboot.
Win + P > Second screen only
Closing the lid with the default action suspends the machine even when a monitor is attached. Set the plugged-in action to do nothing and leave the battery action as sleep.
Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what closing the lid does
The driver panel can override the Windows projection mode, especially on hybrid graphics laptops. Set the same mode there so a driver update does not undo the setup.
A laptop that exhausts through the keyboard deck runs hotter with the lid shut. Put it in a vertical stand or keep the lid slightly open if the fans are on the bottom.
If the internal panel returns after a restart, the projection mode is not persisted. Create a shortcut that runs the display switch command once at logon, or set the mode in the driver profile.
DisplaySwitch.exe /external
The lid action is still sleep. Change it for the plugged-in state.
The cable, the port or the dock firmware. Test the same cable on another device.

The external display is the only one; undocking removes it. Keep the laptop screen as a fallback for travel.
Heat is the concern, not the battery itself. Watch the temperatures in a closed dock.
Yes, that is extended mode. It uses more GPU time but keeps both surfaces.
Press **Win + P** and choose **Extend** or **PC screen only**, then set the lid action back to **Sleep** for mains power. Both changes take effect without a reboot.
