Turn HDR on at the display first
Enable HDR in the monitor's own menu and set it to a bright, accurate picture mode. Windows cannot compensate for a display that is still in its SDR preset.
HDR either looks spectacular or like a grey filter. The difference is calibration, the right toggle order and knowing which games fake it.
Run **Windows HDR Calibration**, enable HDR in Windows and in the game, and set **SDR brightness** for the desktop. Turn HDR off again for games without native support - Auto HDR helps some and ruins others.
Enable HDR in the monitor's own menu and set it to a bright, accurate picture mode. Windows cannot compensate for a display that is still in its SDR preset.
Install the **Windows HDR Calibration** app from the Store and follow the three test patterns: darkest visible black, brightest detail, maximum luminance. Save the profile.
Settings > System > Display > HDR > HDR calibration
Set **SDR content brightness** so the desktop looks normal. Too high and the whole screen is washed out; too low and windowed games look dim next to the HDR content.
SDR content brightness: 20-40
In the game's display menu enable HDR, then confirm the gamma pattern looks black at one end and detailed at the other. Twice-brightened or grey output means the game and Windows disagree.
Auto HDR converts SDR games. Leave it on for older titles, off for games with native HDR, and test each game once - a few titles look worse with it.
Settings > System > Display > HDR > Auto HDR
Two shortcuts help: **Win + Alt + B** toggles HDR and **Win + Alt + Up** raises SDR brightness. HDR on a desktop with white documents is too bright.
Win + Alt + B toggle HDR
HDR is enabled in Windows but the display is in SDR mode, or the game outputs SDR. Match both sides before adjusting anything else.
A known behaviour when switching modes. Use fullscreen borderless and a single refresh rate for the game.
The display's local dimming is too aggressive or the tone mapping is conservative. Try the other picture mode and recalibrate.
HDR screenshots need tone mapping. Use the game's own screenshot function or HDR-to-SDR conversion in the capture tool.
Rarely. Entry-level HDR panels clip highlights and look worse than a good SDR profile.
A little, mostly bandwidth. On a modern card it is not measurable in most titles.
Turn HDR off in **Settings > System > Display > HDR**, disable Auto HDR and delete the calibration profile if you want the old look back.
