Fix a Laptop That Will Not Charge

A laptop on mains power that refuses to charge is usually a cable, a port or a firmware decision. The battery is the last suspect, not the first.

TL;DR

Test a **known-good charger** first, check the **port for debris and play**, then read the battery's **charge limit and firmware state**. Many laptops deliberately stop at 80 percent.

Before you start

Requirements

  • A second charger of the right wattage
  • A torch
  • Fifteen minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

Read what the machine reports

The battery report shows the charge level, the design capacity and whether the machine sees mains power. A laptop that reports plugged in but not charging is a different fault from one that sees no power at all.

powercfg /batteryreport
02

Swap the charger, not the laptop

Use a charger with the same voltage and at least the same wattage. Underpowered USB-C supplies can run the machine and still refuse to charge the battery.

⚠ warningA 45 W supply on a laptop that wants 90 W will power it at idle and drop the charge under load. That looks like a battery fault.
03

Inspect the port

Lint in a USB-C port is common and stops the data pins from negotiating power. Look with a torch and remove debris with a wooden toothpick, never with metal.

04

Check the charge limit in firmware

Battery care modes cap the charge at 60 or 80 percent and report it as not charging. The setting lives in the vendor tool or in the firmware, and it is the most common false alarm on a new laptop.

tipIf the limit is on and you need a full battery for a trip, disable it the night before, not ten minutes before you leave.
05

Reset the power controller

Many laptops have a pinhole or a key combination that resets the embedded controller. It clears a stuck charge state without touching your data or the battery.

Hold the power button 15 s with the charger removed
06

Decide whether it is the battery

A battery that charges to 40 percent and stops, or one that reports a design capacity far above its full charge, is worn out. Check the wear percentage before you order a replacement.

powercfg /batteryreport > battery.html
Troubleshooting

Common issues

It charges only when switched off

Firmware or a driver power-management setting. Update the firmware and the chipset driver, then retest.

The charger works on another laptop

The port or the internal charging board. Try the other USB-C port before opening anything.

Charge stops at exactly 80 percent

Battery care mode. Turn it off in the vendor tool if you need the full battery.

The percentage jumps from 60 to 100

A worn cell and a confused gauge. Recalibrate by charging full and discharging to shutdown once.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Can a wrong charger damage it?

USB-C negotiates, so a lower wattage is safe but slow. A barrel plug with the wrong voltage is not.

Is a swollen battery an emergency?

Yes. Stop charging, stop using the machine and have it replaced.

How to undo this

Turn the charge limit back on if you disabled it, and remove the battery report file. No setting was changed permanently by the diagnosis.
