Fix Discord Screen Share Audio Not Working on Windows 11

Discord screen sharing can show video without transmitting sound. Check the shared source, Windows audio routing, and Discord's capture settings to restore audio.

by@guidox updated:10/30/26 time:10 min level:Beginner works on:Windows 10, Windows 11 tools:Discord desktop app
TL;DR

Share a specific application window instead of the entire desktop, confirm that Windows is sending the application's audio to an active output, and restart the stream after changing capture settings.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Windows 11 with the Discord desktop application installed
  • Access to a Discord voice channel or direct call
  • An application playing audio for testing
  • Another participant who can confirm whether the stream contains sound
Step by step

Instructions

01

Check Discord's audio and video settings

Open Discord > User Settings > Voice & Video. Confirm that your normal audio output device is selected and that Discord can play its test sound. This checks local playback before troubleshooting the stream.

02

Share an application window

Join a voice channel and click Share Your Screen. Select the Applications tab and choose the window that is playing audio. Application sharing gives Discord a specific source to capture.

03

Enable stream audio

Review the sharing options for an audio-sharing toggle if Discord displays one. Turn audio sharing on before selecting Go Live. The available controls can differ between application and screen capture.

04

Check the application's Windows audio output

Open Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer while the application is playing audio. Find the application under Apps and confirm that it is not muted. Set its Output device to your active playback device if the routing is incorrect.

05

Disable experimental audio capture if available

Open Discord > User Settings > Voice & Video and look for an experimental application audio capture setting. If your installed Discord version exposes this setting, turn it off temporarily and start a new stream. Skip this step if the option is not present.

06

Restart the stream

Click Stop Streaming in Discord. Close and reopen the application you want to share, then start application sharing again. This refreshes the capture session after changing audio settings.

07

Verify audio with another participant

Play a short video or other audio source in the shared application. Ask another participant to listen to the stream with its volume turned up. The fix is confirmed when they hear the application's sound alongside its video.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

Viewers can see the application but hear nothing.

Stop sharing the entire desktop and share the application's window. Check Settings > System > Sound > Volume mixer for muted audio or incorrect output routing.

Audio disappears when switching to another application.

Return to the shared window and restart the stream. If you need audio from multiple applications, check whether your Discord version supports system-audio capture for screen sharing.

The stream contains sound but viewers hear it twice.

Check whether a microphone is capturing speaker output. Use headphones and make sure the same application audio is not being routed into Discord through a virtual microphone.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does Discord transmit microphone audio separately from screen-share audio?

Yes. Voice chat microphone capture and application stream audio are separate sources.

Can I share audio from a browser?

Yes, supported browser windows can transmit audio through Discord desktop screen sharing.

How to undo this

Stop streaming. Restore any changed Volume mixer output assignments and re-enable an experimental capture setting if you disabled it.
