Fix Windows 11 External Monitor Not Detected

An external monitor remains black or does not appear in Windows display settings. Check the input source, cable connection, projection mode, and graphics driver.

by@guidox updated:10/30/26 time:10 min level:Beginner works on:Windows 10, Windows 11
TL;DR

Confirm that the monitor uses the correct input and that the cable is connected to a working video output. Use Windows display detection and projection settings before troubleshooting the graphics driver.

Before you start

Requirements

  • An external monitor with power
  • A compatible HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C display connection
  • Access to the monitor's physical menu controls
Step by step

Instructions

01

Check the monitor's power and input

Turn on the external monitor and open its built-in Input or Source menu. Select the input matching the connected cable, such as HDMI 1 or DisplayPort. A wrong input source can produce a black screen even when Windows is functioning normally.

02

Inspect the display cable

Disconnect and reconnect the video cable at both ends. Make sure the connectors are fully seated and that any USB-C connection supports video output. If possible, test a different known-working cable to rule out a damaged connection.

03

Select the correct Windows projection mode

Press Win + P to open the Windows projection menu. Choose Extend to use the monitor as an additional desktop or Duplicate to mirror the primary display. Avoid PC screen only, which disables output to the secondary screen.

04

Detect the external monitor manually

Open Settings > System > Display. Expand Multiple displays and select Detect if the external display is not listed. Windows will attempt to identify another connected display.

05

Check the display arrangement

Under Settings > System > Display, select Identify to display screen numbers on detected monitors. Drag the display rectangles to match their physical positions. Select Apply to save the arrangement so the mouse moves between screens correctly.

06

Check the graphics adapter

Right-click Start and select Device Manager. Expand Display adapters and inspect the installed graphics device for warning symbols. If Windows reports a driver problem, use the PC or GPU manufacturer's official driver support page to obtain a compatible driver.

07

Restart the graphics driver

Press the keyboard shortcut below while Windows is running. The screen may briefly flash or go black as Windows resets the graphics driver. Check whether the external monitor becomes active afterward.

Win + Ctrl + Shift + B
tipThis shortcut does not replace a damaged display cable or fix an unsupported video connection.
08

Verify the second display

Open Settings > System > Display and confirm that both monitors appear. Select Extend these displays if you want separate desktop space, then move a window onto the external monitor. Confirm that the picture remains stable and uses an appropriate resolution.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

The monitor displays "No Signal."

Check the monitor input selection, cable, and video output port. Test another port or cable before reinstalling drivers.

Windows detects the monitor but its screen stays black.

Use Win + P to select Extend, then check the selected resolution and refresh rate under Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.

A USB-C monitor is not detected.

Verify that the PC's USB-C port supports display output and that the cable supports the required video mode. USB-C charging or data support alone does not guarantee external display support.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Can every USB-C port connect to a monitor?

No. The port must support a compatible display output technology, such as DisplayPort Alt Mode or another supported video connection.

Should I uninstall my graphics driver first?

No. Check cables, input selection, Windows projection settings, and driver status before considering a driver reinstall.

How to undo this

Restore the original Win + P projection mode and display arrangement under Settings > System > Display. Reconnect the original cable or input source if you changed the physical configuration.
