Fix Windows Update Stuck at Zero Percent

An update that never moves past 0% is usually a broken service or a full software distribution cache. Four steps fix most cases without a reinstall.

by@guidox updated:10/30/26 time:25 min level:Intermediate tested on:Windows 11 24H2 works on:Windows 10, Windows 11
TL;DR

Stop the **Windows Update** and **BITS** services, rename the **SoftwareDistribution** folder, restart both services and run the update again. If it still fails, run the **DISM** and **SFC** repairs before anything else.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Admin rights
  • 10 GB free on the system drive
  • A working internet connection
Step by step

Instructions

01

Read the error code first

Open **Settings > Windows Update > Update history** and note the failure code. A code from the 0x8007 range points at the update components, 0x800f at a damaged component store, 0x8024 at the network.

⚠ warningWithout the code you are guessing. Write it down before changing anything.
02

Clear the update cache

Stop the two services, rename the download folder and start them again. Windows rebuilds the folder on the next check, which clears corrupted partial downloads.

net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
ren C:\indows\oftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old
net start wuauserv
net start bits
tipThe renamed folder can be deleted after the next successful update. It is only a cache.
03

Repair the component store

Run DISM with the restore-health switch, then SFC. DISM repairs the image Windows Update patches; SFC repairs the system files that call it. Order matters.

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
04

Check the update services

Confirm that **Windows Update**, **BITS**, **Cryptographic Services** and **Windows Installer** are set to their defaults. A tweaked startup type is the second most common cause.

services.msc
05

Try the update again

Reboot, open Windows Update and check for updates. A stalled install that now downloads but fails on install points at a driver or an antivirus filter, not at the cache.

tipUnplug USB drives and close the antivirus during a feature update. Both are known to block the final phase.
06

Use the official troubleshooter last

If nothing helped, run the Windows Update troubleshooter from **Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters**. It resets the same components plus a few registry keys.

Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters > Windows Update
Troubleshooting

Common issues

The services will not stop

Something is holding them open - close the Settings app and retry from an elevated prompt. A reboot also releases them.

DISM reports an error 0x800f081f

The image needs a source. Point DISM at a mounted ISO with /Source and the install.wim from the same build.

The update installs but rolls back

A driver or a filter driver blocks it. Unplug peripherals, disconnect a third-party antivirus and retry.

There is no space for the update

A feature update needs about 10 GB. Free the space first - the update will not run on a full drive.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Should I use a third-party update tool?

No. The built-in repair covers the same ground and does not install unknown binaries.

Is it safe to delete SoftwareDistribution.old?

Yes, after the next successful update. It only holds old downloads.

How to undo this

Nothing in this guide is destructive. If you renamed the cache folder, delete **SoftwareDistribution.old** once updates work again.
