Let Storage Sense Clean Windows Up on a Schedule

Automatic cleanup for temp files, the recycle bin and an overgrown Downloads folder, with rules you set once and can audit.

TL;DR

Turn **Storage Sense** on under **Settings > System > Storage**, set a weekly schedule and the recycle bin retention, then run it once by hand to see what it actually frees.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Windows 11
  • Ten minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

Open the switch

Storage Sense lives inside the Storage page, below the category list. It is per user and runs in the background when the schedule fires.

Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense
02

Choose the trigger

Weekly or monthly runs predictably. The low disk space trigger only fires below roughly five percent free, which on a small system drive is already too late.

Run Storage Sense: Every week
tipA weekly run costs seconds and keeps temporary folders from growing into tens of gigabytes.
03

Decide what may be deleted

Temporary files and recycle bin items are safe by definition. Downloads is not: the switch deletes files the user put there on purpose.

Delete files in my Downloads folder: Never
⚠ warningThere is no undo for that folder. Only enable it if everything inside is disposable by design.
04

Run it once and read the number

The manual run reports what it reclaimed, which is the only honest measure of whether the schedule earns its keep.

Run Storage Sense now
05

Add the Windows.old cleanup

Previous installations and update leftovers are not part of Storage Sense. The disk cleanup tool with a saved profile removes them, at the cost of the rollback option.

cleanmgr /sageset:1
⚠ warningTick Previous Windows installation only when you are sure the current build works. That decision also removes Go back in Recovery.
06

Measure the result

Free space is the only number that matters. Compare before and after instead of trusting the dialog.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

Nothing gets deleted

Files are in use, or they are cloud placeholders. OneDrive content is skipped by the cleanup rules.

Free space did not grow

Deleted items still sit in the recycle bin until the retention window passes. Empty it by hand to see the real gain.

It removed a download I needed

The Downloads retention was on. That folder has no restore path beyond a backup.

Storage Sense turns itself off

A group policy or a third-party cleaner disables the task. Check with gpresult before re-enabling.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does it touch my documents?

No. Only temporary files, the recycle bin and Downloads when that rule is on.

Do I still need the disk cleanup tool?

Only for Windows.old and update leftovers, which Storage Sense leaves alone.

How to undo this

Turn Storage Sense off on the same page. Deletions cannot be undone, so check the recycle bin and Downloads rules before the first run.
