Move a Game Library to Another Drive Without Re-downloading

A full system drive with four games is a solvable problem. Steam and the Xbox app both move installed content, and the methods differ.

TL;DR

In **Steam**, add a second library folder and use **Move install folder** on the game. In the **Xbox app**, use **Manage > Move** per title. Never copy the folder by hand and expect the launcher to notice.

Before you start

Requirements

  • A second drive
  • Steam or the Xbox app
  • Fifteen minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

Create the library folder first

Both launchers want a new top-level folder rather than an existing one with content. Create an empty folder on the target drive and point the launcher at it.

Steam > Settings > Storage > Add Drive
02

Move the game from the storage page

Steam lists each installed title with its size and offers a destination picker. The move copies the files, verifies them and rewrites the manifest in one step.

tipMoving a 100 GB title across drives takes as long as the copy plus a few minutes. Do not interrupt it.
03

Use the app's own move for Xbox titles

The Xbox app moves its titles through the settings of the app. The operation needs free space on the target and it can fail when the game is running.

Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Manage > Move
04

Watch the drive letter

A library on a removable drive breaks when the letter changes. Assign a fixed letter in disk management before you move anything to an external drive.

diskmgmt.msc
⚠ warningA game moved to a drive that later mounts as a different letter appears as uninstalled, and the launcher offers to download it again.
05

Verify the files after the move

Both launchers have a verify function. Run it once per game; it repairs a move that was interrupted by a power loss or a full drive.

06

Check the shortcuts

Desktop shortcuts can still point at the old path after a move. Let the launcher recreate them rather than editing the target by hand.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

The move fails near the end

The target drive is full or the file system does not allow files over 4 GB. Use NTFS, not FAT32.

The game shows as uninstalled

The library folder is not attached to the launcher, or the drive letter changed.

Saves did not move

Some games keep saves in the user profile. Check the save folder separately.

The launcher re-downloads after a move

The manifest was not updated. Move the title with the launcher tool, not by hand.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Can I keep two libraries?

Yes. Steam supports several, and a game lives in exactly one of them.

Does the move need the game closed?

Yes. A running game locks its files and the move fails.

How to undo this

Move the title back to the original library with the same tool. The game folder and saves return to their previous location.
