Read UPS Battery Status and Set Up a Safe Shutdown

A UPS that only beeps is half a UPS. Windows can read the battery, warn you, and shut the machine down before the cells run out.

by@guidox updated:10/31/26 time:20 min level:Intermediate tested on:Windows 11 24H2 works on:Windows 10, Windows 11 tools:USB UPS
TL;DR

Connect the UPS by **USB**, confirm it appears under **Batteries**, then set the **critical battery level** and the **critical action** so the machine hibernates or shuts down with time to spare.

Before you start

Requirements

  • A UPS with USB
  • Admin rights
  • Twenty minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

Confirm Windows sees the UPS

A USB UPS appears as a battery device with its own driver. Without that entry, only the vendor tool can read the charge and Windows cannot react to it.

devmgmt.msc > Batteries
02

Read the current state

The power configuration tool prints the battery state, charge and estimated time. Run it once on mains power and once with the plug pulled to see the real numbers.

powercfg /batteryreport
tipThe report is written as an HTML file in the current folder. Open it in a browser for the charge history graph.
03

Set the warning and critical levels

The default critical level of five percent is far too late for a desktop that needs a minute to hibernate. Raise both thresholds per power plan.

powercfg /setdcvalueindex scheme_current sub_battery bcritical 20
04

Choose the critical action

Hibernate is safer than shutdown for open work: it writes memory to disk and resumes where you left off. Shut down only if hibernation is disabled.

powercfg /setdcvalueindex scheme_current sub_battery baction 2
⚠ warningShutdown with unsaved documents loses them. Hibernate needs free space equal to the installed memory on the system drive.
05

Test the switch with a real load

Pull the mains plug with a document open and watch the notification. The machine should warn once and then act at the threshold, not at five percent.

06

Keep the vendor tool for the extras

Only the vendor software reports load, input voltage and self-test results. Windows reports charge and time, which is enough for a safe shutdown.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

No battery entry appears

The UPS cable is a data cable, not a charge cable, or the driver is missing. Try another USB port.

The machine shuts down instantly

The critical level is too high for the battery's real runtime, or the battery is worn out.

Hibernate is not available

Enable it with powercfg /hibernate on and check the free space.

The beeping never stops

A self-test failure or an overloaded outlet. Check the load in the vendor tool.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does a UPS protect against spikes?

A good one does, and it also keeps the machine alive during a brownout.

How often should the battery be replaced?

Every three to five years. The runtime report shows the decline.

How to undo this

Reset the critical and warning levels to the defaults with **powercfg /setdcvalueindex** and set the action back to shutdown. The UPS keeps working unmanaged.
