Remove an Old Windows Entry from the Boot Menu

TL;DR

List the store with **bcdedit /enum all**, export it with **bcdedit /export**, then remove the stale entry with **bcdedit /delete {guid}**. Set the timeout afterwards if only one entry remains.

Instructions

01

List every boot entry

**/enum all** prints the boot manager, the entries and the device paths. A stale entry points at a partition that no longer exists or is marked as a recovery sequence.

bcdedit /enum all
bcdedit /enum {bootmgr}
Get-Partition | Select-Object DiskNumber,PartitionNumber,DriveLetter,Size,Type | Sort-Object DiskNumber,PartitionNumber
02

Identify the entry to remove

A live entry has a **device partition=C:** that matches an existing volume. An orphan points at **partition=D:** with no volume, or at a volume without Windows.

bcdedit /enum {current} | Select-String -Pattern 'identifier|device|path|description'
bcdedit /enum osloader | Select-String -Pattern 'identifier|device|description'
Get-Volume | Select-Object DriveLetter,FileSystemLabel,Size | Sort-Object DriveLetter
03

Export the store before touching it

**/export** writes the complete store to a file. A wrong delete leaves a machine that cannot boot until the firmware setup is used, and the export is the way back.

bcdedit /export C:\bcd-backup
Get-Item C:\bcd-backup | Select-Object Name,Length,LastWriteTime
Copy-Item C:\bcd-backup 'D:\bcd-backup-copy' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
04

Delete the stale entry

**/delete** with the GUID from the listing removes one entry. The boot manager itself must not be deleted, and the current entry is protected.

bcdedit /delete {01234567-89ab-cdef-0123-456789abcdef}
bcdedit /enum osloader | Select-String -Pattern 'identifier|description'
bcdedit /enum all | Select-String -Pattern 'identifier|description'
⚠ warningCopy the GUID from the listing, never type it by hand: deleting the wrong entry removes a working Windows from the menu. Back up the store first with bcdedit /export C:\bcd-backup (restore with bcdedit /import).
05

Clean up the timeout

With one entry left a long timeout is wasted seconds on every boot. **/timeout 3** is the usual compromise, and msconfig does the same from a GUI.

bcdedit /timeout 3
bcdedit /enum {bootmgr} | Select-String -Pattern 'timeout|displayorder'
msconfig
# Boot tab > set Timeout > make sure the remaining entry is the default
06

Verify with a restart

The menu should show one entry, or none, and the machine should start without a delay. A menu that still appears means a second entry survived.

Restart-Computer
bcdedit /enum all | Select-String -Pattern 'identifier|description|timeout'
Get-CimInstance Win32_OperatingSystem | Select-Object LastBootUpTime,Caption
bcdedit /enum {current} | Select-String -Pattern 'path|device'
Troubleshooting

Common issues

bcdedit says access is denied

The shell is not elevated. A standard account cannot write the boot store.

The menu shows an entry that is not in the store

The firmware holds its own list. Remove it there with the firmware setup or bcdedit /enum firmware.

The machine no longer boots

Import the export with bcdedit /import C:\bcd-backup from the recovery environment, or run bootrec from a bootable USB.

The entry comes back after an update

A pending upgrade recreates it. Remove it again after the update completes.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Can I delete the recovery entry?

Better not. It is used by the recovery environment and by some updates. Remove only entries for Windows installations you no longer have.

Does this free disk space?

No. The old Windows folder stays until you delete it, which is a separate and more careful operation.

Is msconfig enough?

For deleting an entry yes. For inspecting device paths and sequences bcdedit shows more.

How to undo this

Restore the previous store with bcdedit /import C:\bcd-backup, and set the timeout back to its original value.
