Remove Unwanted Startup Apps With Autoruns on Windows 11

Use Microsoft's Autoruns to identify unnecessary startup entries in Windows 11. Disable unwanted launch points carefully without deleting essential drivers or security components.

⚠ Safety notice

Disabling the wrong automatic launch entry can break security, accessibility, hardware, or backup functions. Do not remove unknown entries solely because they are unsigned or unfamiliar.

TL;DR

Use **Autoruns** to inspect applications, services, scheduled tasks, and other automatic launch points. Disabling an entry can reduce background activity, but it does not remove malware or guarantee faster startup.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Windows 11 25H2, build 26200 or a later servicing build.
  • Administrator account.
  • Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns from https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/autoruns.
Step by step

Instructions

01

Download Autoruns from Microsoft

Download **Autoruns** from the official Sysinternals page and extract the archive to a dedicated folder. Avoid third-party repackaged copies. The tool exposes powerful automatic-start locations, so changing entries without identifying them can affect system stability.

⚠ warningAutoruns is an inspection and configuration tool, not an automatic safe-to-remove list.
02

Create a baseline and open Autoruns

Launch the appropriate executable as administrator and accept the license terms. Allow the scan to finish, then save a baseline snapshot or screenshots of the entries you intend to change. Administrator access reveals additional system-wide entries.

tipKeep a record of each entry's name, publisher, and original enabled state.
03

Filter the results

Enable **Hide Windows Entries** and, where useful, **Hide Microsoft Entries** to narrow the list. Review the **Logon** tab first, then inspect other categories only when you have a specific reason. Hidden entries are not necessarily harmless, and non-Microsoft entries are not automatically unwanted.

tipUse the publisher, image path, digital signature, and official vendor documentation to identify unfamiliar items.
04

Research suspicious or unnecessary entries

Select an entry and inspect its details before changing it. Search the exact publisher and filename on the vendor's official site when necessary. Do not disable security software, storage drivers, accessibility tools, or hardware utilities that you rely on.

⚠ warningA legitimate signed entry can still be unnecessary, while an unsigned entry is not automatically malicious.
05

Disable one entry at a time

Clear the checkbox next to a confirmed unwanted entry instead of deleting it. Start with obvious launchers or applications you do not use. The associated app may lose tray functions, update checks, synchronization, or hotkeys.

tipChange only one or two entries before testing so you can identify the cause if a feature stops working.
06

Restart and test normal operation

Restart Windows and check sign-in time, tray applications, audio, networking, and any affected peripherals. Reopen Autoruns to confirm the selected entry remains disabled. Startup improvements depend on the workload and may be negligible on some systems.

tipIf a function breaks, restore the relevant checkbox before investigating other entries.
Troubleshooting

Common issues

Autoruns does not show every startup item

Run it as administrator, wait for the scan to finish, and check other tabs such as Scheduled Tasks, Services, and Drivers. Filters can hide entries.

A disabled application still starts

Check whether it uses another startup mechanism, a scheduled task, a service, or its own background setting. Identify the exact launch point before changing it.

A tray icon or hardware feature disappeared

Reopen Autoruns and re-enable the entry you changed. Restart the associated application or Windows if needed.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Should I delete startup entries?

Prefer unchecking entries. Disabling is easier to reverse and preserves the original configuration.

Is every non-Microsoft entry safe to disable?

No. Third-party entries may control audio, input devices, security products, backups, or hardware functions.

Does Autoruns remove malware?

It can help identify automatic launch points, but it is not a substitute for Microsoft Defender or a reputable malware-removal process.

How to undo this

Run Autoruns as administrator, find each modified entry, and restore its checkbox to the recorded original state. Restart Windows and test the affected software. If you cannot identify the entry you changed, use your saved baseline and avoid deleting registry keys manually.
