Run a Jellyfin Media Server on a Windows PC

Jellyfin turns an idle desktop into a streaming server for the whole house: no subscription, real metadata, and hardware transcoding that keeps the CPU cool.

by@guidox updated:10/31/26 time:40 min level:Intermediate tested on:Windows 11 24H2 works on:Windows 10, Windows 11 tools:Jellyfin Server
TL;DR

Install **Jellyfin Server**, point a library at correctly named folders, enable **hardware transcoding** in the dashboard and open port 8096 for the local network. Remote access belongs behind a VPN or a reverse proxy.

Before you start

Requirements

  • A PC that can stay on
  • At least one media drive
  • A wired connection for the server
Step by step

Instructions

01

Install the server and create the admin

Download the Windows installer from jellyfin.org and let it register as a service. The first start opens a setup wizard in the browser; the admin account you create there is the only way in later.

http://localhost:8096
02

Name the folders before you add them

Jellyfin reads metadata from the folder structure. Movies in **Name (Year)/file.mkv** and shows in **Series/Season 01/** cover most libraries; a wrong name means a wrong poster and a wrong plot summary.

D:\edia\ovies\rrival (2016)\Arrival (2016).mkv
tipOne folder per movie, one file inside it. Subtitles and extras go next to the video.
03

Add the library

In the dashboard open **Libraries > Add Media Library**, choose the content type, add the folder and enable real-time monitoring. Refresh metadata once after the first scan finishes.

Dashboard > Libraries > Add Media Library
04

Turn on hardware transcoding

Open **Dashboard > Playback > Transcoding** and enable the hardware type your hardware supports: **Intel QuickSync** on a modern iGPU, **NVENC** on an NVIDIA card, **AMF** on Radeon. Without it every remote stream is decoded on the CPU.

⚠ warningInstall the current GPU driver first. QuickSync does not work for Jellyfin without it.
05

Open it to the local network, carefully

Add a firewall rule for TCP 8096 on the private profile and connect from the TV or phone by IP address. Do not forward that port on the router - use a VPN such as WireGuard or a reverse proxy with TLS.

netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="Jellyfin" dir=in action=allow protocol=TCP localport=8096 profile=private
⚠ warningAn open media port on the internet is found by scanners within hours.
06

Back up the configuration

The database, users and metadata live in the server data folder. Copy it and the library folders on a schedule; rebuilding the library from scratch costs an evening.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

Transcoding stays on the CPU

The hardware type is not enabled or the driver is missing. The transcode log names the chosen encoder and the reason for the fallback.

Playback buffers on Wi-Fi

The bitrate exceeds the link. Lower the remote quality setting or use Ethernet; a 4K remux needs a wired connection.

Posters and titles are wrong

The folder name does not match the pattern. Rename to Name (Year) or put the IMDb id in the folder name, then refresh metadata.

The service does not start after a reboot

Port 8096 is taken or the service account lost access to the media drive. Check the service state and the log folder.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Jellyfin or Plex?

Jellyfin is fully open and free, hardware transcoding included. Plex has better apps on some TVs and a paid tier.

Can it run on a NAS instead?

Yes, and that saves power. The Windows route makes sense when the PC is on anyway.

How to undo this

Stop and uninstall the Jellyfin service, then delete the server data folder. The media folders and their files are not touched.
