Confirm the game's Direct3D version
A Direct3D 9 game needs d3d9.dll, a Direct3D 11 game needs d3d11.dll. Putting the wrong file next to the executable does nothing at all, which looks like a broken wrapper.
d3d9.dll / d3d10_1.dll / d3d11.dll
A 2008 game on a modern driver can stutter or refuse to start. Translating its Direct3D calls to Vulkan often fixes both, with two files next to the executable.
Drop the matching **DXVK DLLs** next to the game's executable, run the game once and check the **overlay** proves the wrapper is active. Keep a copy of the original DLLs.

Copy the existing DLLs to a folder before you overwrite them. Restoring two files is a ten second fix; a game that will not start without a reinstall is not.
A 64-bit executable needs the x64 files; a 32-bit one needs x86. Check the executable in Task Manager while the game runs if you are unsure which build you have.
Set the overlay variable before launching and a small HUD appears in the corner. Without that confirmation you are guessing whether the game loaded your file or its own.
set DXVK_HUD=fps
The first minutes compile shaders and stutter; the cache lives next to the game and the second run is smooth. Deleting it to free space brings the stutter back.
Do not install the DLLs globally. A system-wide override affects every game, including the ones that were working, and the next driver update changes the result again.
Wrong architecture or a missing Vulkan runtime. Install the current graphics driver, then check the file you copied.
The game loaded its own DLL from another folder. Place the files next to the executable that actually runs.
A weak Vulkan path on an old driver. Update the driver, or remove the wrapper for this title.
An anti-cheat check. Remove the wrapper for online games; it is a single-player tool.
It replaces a graphics library locally. Online games with anti-cheat are the exception; keep it to single-player titles.
No. It fixes rendering and stutter; game logic, resolution limits and input bugs stay.
Delete the copied DLLs and restore the backups you made. The shader cache folder can be removed as well; the game recreates it.
