TL;DR

Open Settings > System > Display > Night light, enable scheduling, and choose either sunset-to-sunrise operation or custom hours.

Before you start

Requirements

  • A Windows 11 computer with a compatible graphics driver.
  • Access to display settings.
  • Correct Windows date and time settings.
Step by step

Instructions

01

Check the system clock

Open **Settings > Time & language > Date & time**. Confirm that the displayed time and time zone are correct, and enable **Set time automatically** if appropriate. Night Light uses the system clock to determine when a custom schedule should activate.

02

Open Night Light settings

Open **Settings > System > Display** and select **Night light**. Confirm that the Night Light controls are available rather than grayed out. This page contains the color-strength adjustment and automatic scheduling options.

03

Adjust the color strength

Move the **Strength** slider to a comfortable level, such as 40, while temporarily enabling **Night light** to preview the result. The screen should display warmer colors as the value increases. Choose a level that keeps text readable and does not interfere with work requiring accurate colors.

04

Enable automatic scheduling

Under **Schedule night light**, move the toggle to **On**. Windows will now allow the Night Light feature to follow a schedule rather than requiring manual activation. The schedule options should appear underneath the toggle.

05

Select the schedule type

Choose **Set hours** for a fixed schedule, or **Sunset to sunrise** if you prefer a location-based schedule. For a fixed configuration, set the start time to 21:00 and the end time to 07:00. The selected schedule will apply automatically according to the system clock.

06

Verify the display behavior

Temporarily turn **Night light** on and off using its control in **Settings > System > Display**. Confirm that the display changes between its regular and warmer appearance. Return it to the state appropriate for the current schedule and verify that **Schedule night light** remains enabled.

⚠ warningNight Light changes displayed colors. Disable it temporarily before photography, design, or video work that requires accurate color reproduction.

Sunset-to-sunrise scheduling is unavailable.

Check Settings > Privacy & security > Location and confirm that location services are available and permitted as appropriate. Alternatively, use Set hours without location-based scheduling.

Night Light activates at the wrong time.

Check Settings > Time & language > Date & time for an incorrect time zone or system clock. Review the start and end times under Schedule night light.
