Separate Game and Voice Audio With Voicemeeter Banana

Game on the headphones, voice chat on the speakers, one microphone for both - the virtual mixer does what the Windows mixer cannot, with a fader for every source.

by@guidox updated:10/30/26 time:30 min level:Intermediate tested on:Windows 11 24H2 works on:Windows 10, Windows 11 tools:Voicemeeter Banana, VB-Cable
TL;DR

Install **Voicemeeter Banana** and its virtual cable, set the game to the **Voicemeeter Input** device and the chat app to **Voicemeeter Aux**, then assign each strip to a different hardware output.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Voicemeeter Banana and the VB-Cable driver
  • Two output devices
  • A reboot after the driver install
Step by step

Instructions

01

Install both parts

Install Voicemeeter Banana, then the virtual cable from the same vendor. The cable is the device apps see; the mixer decides where that signal actually goes.

⚠ warningThe installer needs a reboot before the new devices appear. Do not skip it and then wonder where they are.
02

Set Windows to the mixer

In **Settings > System > Sound** set the output to **Voicemeeter Input** and the input to **Voicemeeter Output**. From now on every app plays into the mixer.

Output: Voicemeeter Input
Input: Voicemeeter Output
03

Assign hardware outputs

In Voicemeeter choose **A1** as your headphones and **A2** as the speakers. Right-click the A1 label to pick the device, then confirm with the menu.

A1: headphones
A2: speakers
tipUse WASAPI or ASIO devices for A1 if the latency feels high with MME.
04

Split the apps

Set the game to **Voicemeeter Input** and the chat app to **Voicemeeter Aux Input**. On the mixer, route the game strip to A1 only and the chat strip to A2 only.

05

Configure the microphone

Pick the real microphone on the hardware input strip, enable **B1** to send it to the virtual cable and set the gain. Apps that record from **Voicemeeter Output** now get your voice.

06

Save the setup

Store the configuration as an XML preset from the menu and load it at startup. A mixer that is not saved is rebuilt from memory every boot.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

There is no sound after installing

The A1 device is not selected or the strip is muted. Check the A1 button on the strip and the master section.

Audio crackles under load

The buffer is too small. Raise it in the Voicemeeter menu and prefer WASAPI over MME.

The microphone is not detected in calls

The app still uses the old device. Select **Voicemeeter Output** in the app itself, not only in Windows.

Everything is mono or quiet

A strip is panned or the sample rate differs between input and output. Set 48000 Hz everywhere.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Banana or the standard version?

Banana when you need three inputs and two outputs. The standard version handles one source and one output.

Can I record the mix?

Yes, route the strips to B1 as well and record from **Voicemeeter Output** in Audacity.

How to undo this

Set Windows back to your real output and input device, then uninstall Voicemeeter and the virtual cable. The audio devices return to the previous state.
