Set File Explorer to Show Extensions and Open This PC

TL;DR

Uncheck **Hide extensions for known file types**, set **Open File Explorer to: This PC**, then apply the same view to all folders. Verify with **Get-ItemProperty** on the Advanced key.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Windows 11
  • 5 minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

Read the current folder options

**HideFileExt** and its neighbours live under the Explorer Advanced key. The values are what Explorer actually uses, regardless of what the dialog shows.

Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced' | Select-Object HideFileExt,Hidden,ShowSuperHidden,LaunchTo
Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced' | Select-Object * -ExcludeProperty PS*
02

Show the extensions

**HideFileExt = 0** shows every extension. A file named report.txt.exe then looks like what it is, which is the single most useful security setting in Explorer.

Set-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced' -Name HideFileExt -Value 0 -Type DWord
Stop-Process -Name explorer -Force
Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced' | Select-Object HideFileExt
03

Open This PC instead of Quick Access

**LaunchTo = 1** opens This PC, **2** opens Downloads and **3** opens Home. The setting is per user and applies to new windows only.

Set-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced' -Name LaunchTo -Value 1 -Type DWord
Get-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced' | Select-Object LaunchTo
Start-Process explorer.exe
04

Show hidden and system files when you need them

Hidden files are a separate toggle from extensions. System files stay hidden by default, and that is the right default for daily use.

Set-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced' -Name Hidden -Value 1 -Type DWord
Set-ItemProperty 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced' -Name ShowSuperHidden -Value 0 -Type DWord
Get-ChildItem C:\ -Force | Select-Object -First 10 Name,Attributes
05

Apply the view to all folders

Window size and column layout are stored per folder type. **Apply to Folders** in the View options copies the current view to every folder of the same type.

# Explorer > ... > Options > View > Apply to Folders
Get-ChildItem 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags' -Recurse -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Measure-Object
Get-ChildItem 'HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\BagMRU' -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue | Select-Object -First 5 Name
06

Verify with a real file

Create a file with a double extension and look at it in Explorer. If it shows both extensions, the setting is active and the warning about disguised files is gone.

New-Item -Path "$env:USERPROFILE\Desktop\invoice.pdf.exe" -ItemType File -Force | Out-Null
Start-Process explorer.exe -ArgumentList "$env:USERPROFILE\Desktop"
Get-ChildItem "$env:USERPROFILE\Desktop" | Select-Object Name,Extension
Troubleshooting

Common issues

Extensions still appear hidden

The change needs a fresh Explorer process, or a policy key overrides it. Check HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer for HideFileExt.

Every window opens Quick Access again

LaunchTo is per user; make sure you changed HKCU and not HKLM. Sign out and back in if Explorer keeps the old value.

The View tab has no Apply to Folders

Windows 11 moved it into Options > View. Open it from the ... menu in the toolbar.

Some folders forget their view

The bag cache grew too large. Delete the Bags and BagMRU keys; Explorer rebuilds them with defaults.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does showing extensions slow anything down?

No. It only changes how names are rendered.

Why does one file show no extension?

Files with no extension at all exist, and Windows shows them as they are. That is not a hidden extension.

Can I set this for all users?

Yes, through the default user hive or a policy. Per-user is the safer default on a shared machine.

How to undo this

Set HideFileExt back to 1 and LaunchTo back to 3 for Home, then restart Explorer.
