List what the machine remembers
The known networks list keeps every network ever joined, including hotel and phone hotspots. Old entries compete for the connection at every boot.
netsh wlan show profiles
Windows reconnects to whichever network it likes, which is how a laptop ends up on a slow guest network next to its own router. The order is fixable.
Forget the networks you do not want, then set the **auto-connect** flag per network. Windows tries known networks in a fixed order; on a wired plus wireless machine, the wired connection wins by metric.

netsh wlan show profiles
Removing a profile also removes its stored key. That is the cleanest way to stop a laptop joining a neighbour's open network.
netsh wlan delete profile name=OldCafe
Each profile has an auto-connect flag in the settings of that network. Turning it off keeps the password but requires a manual click.
Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks
When both adapters are active, the lower metric wins. A wired adapter left at automatic usually beats Wi-Fi, but a dock can change that.
netsh interface ipv4 show interfaces
Two SSIDs from the same router appear as separate networks. Connecting to the 5 GHz one and disabling auto-connect on the other keeps the fast path.
Reboot with both candidates in range. The status page names the connected network, and it should be the one you configured.
netsh wlan show interfaces
Auto-connect is on for that profile, or a stored profile with a higher priority exists. Check the full list.
Adjust the interface metric, or disable the wireless adapter while docked.
Router band steering. Fix it there or split the SSIDs.
A sync from another Windows device restored the profile.
Usually yes. A feature update rarely resets network profiles.
Not directly. The order follows the profile list, which you control by deleting and re-adding entries.
Re-add the forgotten network with its password and switch auto-connect back on where you turned it off. The machine reconnects as before.
