Set up a custom lock screen slideshow with local photos on Windows 11

Pick a photo folder, set the right resolution and let Windows 11 rotate your own images on the lock screen without ads or Spotlight.

by@guidox updated:10/26/26 time:10 min level:Beginner works on:Windows 11 25H2
TL;DR

In **Settings > Personalization > Lock screen**, switch from **Windows Spotlight** to **Slideshow** and point it at a dedicated folder of **16:9 images** sized for your display.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Windows 11 25H2
  • A folder of photos you own, stored locally (not OneDrive on-demand)
  • Images sized to at least your monitor's resolution
Step by step

Instructions

01

Decide which lock screen tier you want

Pick one of three realistic approaches. All three are free; the choice is about control.

Budget tier: Keep Spotlight, just hide tips and ads
Sweet spot: Local Slideshow from a curated folder
No-compromise: Slideshow + disable Spotlight suggestions + fixed logon background
02

What actually matters for a clean slideshow

Three things decide the result: image aspect ratio, resolution, and the folder being truly local. Everything else (sort order, transition style) is cosmetic.

Matters: 16:9 or your monitor's aspect ratio, >= native resolution, local path
Marketing: 'AI enhancement', 'dynamic themes', animated wallpaper apps
⚠ warningOneDrive 'Files on-Demand' files that are cloud-only will not display - Windows needs the pixels on disk.
03

Prepare a dedicated photo folder

Create a folder like **C:\\Users\\<you>\\Pictures\\LockScreen** and copy only images that look good at your monitor's native resolution. Avoid portrait phone shots unless you have a vertical display. Keep the folder under 200 images so Windows indexes it quickly.

mkdir %USERPROFILE%\Pictures\LockScreen
04

Point Windows at your folder

Open **Settings > Personalization > Lock screen**. Change **Personalize your lock screen** from **Windows spotlight** to **Slideshow**. Click **Browse** and add your folder. Expand **Advanced slideshow settings** and turn off **Only use pictures that fit my screen** if you want everything to show, or leave it on for a stricter look.

Settings -> Personalization -> Lock screen
Personalize your lock screen: Slideshow
Add folder: C:\Users\<you>\Pictures\LockScreen
tipAlso turn off 'Get fun facts, tips, tricks and more on your lock screen' to remove ads.
05

Check compatibility and physical fit

Confirm your display resolution in **Settings > System > Display** and make sure your images meet or exceed it. If you run multiple monitors, the lock screen only shows on the primary one - resize to that monitor's resolution. Rotating displays and ultrawides need matching aspect ratios or Windows will crop.

06

What to skip

Skip third-party lock screen replacers; they fight with Windows updates. Skip paid "4K wallpaper packs" when free high-resolution photos are everywhere. Skip animated lock screens: Windows does not natively support video on the lock screen, and apps that fake it drain battery on laptops.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

Slideshow stops after one image

The folder path is OneDrive cloud-only. Right-click the folder and choose 'Always keep on this device', or move it to a local-only path.

Images look blurry on a 4K monitor

The source files are smaller than your resolution. Replace them with images at least 3840x2160.

Slideshow option is missing

You are on an Enterprise device with a policy that forces Spotlight. Ask your admin, or test on a personal account.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Can I use video on the lock screen?

No, Windows 11 only supports still images for the lock screen slideshow.

Does the slideshow run on battery?

By default, no. Enable it under Advanced slideshow settings if you want it to play while unplugged.

Can I change the sign-in screen background too?

Yes. In Settings > Personalization > Lock screen, enable 'Show the lock screen background picture on the sign-in screen'.

How to undo this

Open Settings > Personalization > Lock screen and change 'Personalize your lock screen' back to Windows spotlight. Remove any folders you added under Slideshow.
