Set Up Cemu for Wii U Games

Cemu needs three things people skip: the graphics packs, the correct input profile and a shader cache that is allowed to build. Get those and it runs smoothly.

by@guidox updated:10/31/26 time:35 min level:Intermediate tested on:Windows 11 24H2, Cemu 2.0 works on:Windows 10, Windows 11, Linux tools:Cemu, Controller
TL;DR

Point Cemu at your **game folder**, enable the **graphics packs per game**, map the **controller** once as a profile and let the **shader cache** build on the first run.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Cemu
  • Your own game files
  • A controller
Step by step

Instructions

01

Set the game path

Cemu reads games from a folder structure, not from a single file. Add the root folder in the settings and let it scan; titles appear with their real names once the metadata loads.

Options > General settings > Game paths
02

Enable the graphics packs

Each game has its own set of packs: resolution, frame rate, shadow quality and fixes for known glitches. Enable them per game, not globally, and read the notes attached to each one.

Right-click the game > Graphic packs
tipA 60 fps pack can break physics in titles designed for 30. Check the pack description before you enable it.
03

Map the controller as a profile

Map the input once, save it as a named profile and apply it to every game. Remapping per title is how a library ends up with five different layouts.

Options > Input settings > Controller 1
04

Let the shader cache build

The first minutes in a new area stutter because shaders are compiled on demand. Play through the opening area once and the stutter stops; the cache is stored next to the emulator.

⚠ warningDo not delete the shader cache to free space. Rebuilding it costs an hour of stutter for no gain.
05

Pick the renderer and the vsync

Vulkan is the right default on modern GPUs. Leave vsync off if you use a variable refresh display; the emulator's frame pacing behaves better without a hard cap.

Options > Graphic settings > API
06

Check the audio backend

Cemu's audio can lag behind the picture on some titles. If sound drifts, switch to the other backend and test the same scene instead of adjusting the buffer blindly.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

Games show as unknown titles

The folder layout is wrong or the metadata has not downloaded. Rescan the path and check that each game sits in its own folder.

Constant stutter in a new area

Shader compilation. Play the area once and let the cache grow; it is normal on a first run.

The controller does nothing

The profile is not applied, or the wrong controller slot is active. Check Input settings per game.

A 60 fps pack causes odd physics

Disable the pack. Some titles tie logic to the frame rate and cannot be fixed from the emulator side.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Do I need the console firmware?

Cemu installs the shared system files itself. Game files are separate and come from your own console.

Is a shader cache download allowed?

Only if you generated it yourself. Prebuilt caches from the internet mix in data you do not own.

How to undo this

Delete the Cemu folder; every setting and cache lives inside it. Game files stay where they are.
