Set up Cemu with Vulkan and motion controls on Windows 11

Install Cemu, enable the Vulkan backend and map motion controls from a DualSense or Switch Pro controller for Wii U games.

⚠ Safety notice

Only use Cemu with games and keys you legally dumped from Wii U hardware you own.

TL;DR

Install **Cemu** from https://cemu.info, pick the **Vulkan** backend with **async shader compile**, then connect a controller and enable **motion** via **DSU** or the native gamepad option.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Windows 11 25H2
  • Cemu (official build) from https://cemu.info
  • A legally dumped Wii U game and your own Wii U keys
  • A controller with a gyro: DualSense, DualShock 4 or Switch Pro
Step by step

Instructions

01

Pick the right emulator / controller tier

Choose based on what you own. All three run current Wii U titles well on modern hardware.

Budget tier: Keyboard + Xbox controller (no motion), Vulkan backend
Sweet spot: DualSense over USB, native gyro via Cemu's input
No-compromise: Switch Pro or DualSense + DSU server (BetterJoy / DualSenseX) for full motion
02

What actually matters for performance

The graphics backend, shader compile mode and GPU driver matter. CPU is less important than people think for Wii U games - any modern 6-core CPU is enough.

Matters: Vulkan backend, async shader compile, current GPU driver, Wii U key files
Marketing: 8K upscaling claims, 'HD texture packs' as the main selling point
⚠ warningCemu only runs games you dump yourself from your own Wii U. Downloading titles is illegal.
03

Install Cemu and configure the backend

Download Cemu from https://cemu.info and extract (or install via its installer). On first launch, go to **Options > General settings > Graphics**. Set **Graphics API** to **Vulkan**, pick your GPU under **Graphics Device**, and enable **Async shader compile** and **VSync Match emulated**.

Options -> General settings -> Graphics
Graphics API: Vulkan
Graphics Device: (your dedicated GPU)
VSync: Match emulated
[x] Async shader compile
tipAsync shader compile removes most first-run stutter. Expect a slight 'shimmer' on first appearance of effects; it only happens once per shader.
04

Set up the controller as a Wii U GamePad

Go to **Options > Input settings**. Create a new profile, set **Emulated controller** to **Wii U GamePad**, then under **Controller** pick your DualSense / Pro Controller via **SDLController**. Map every button, then open the **Motion** tab. For native gyro, Cemu reads directly from DualSense and DualShock 4 over USB.

Options -> Input settings
Emulated controller: Wii U GamePad
Controller API: SDLController
Controller: (your controller)
Motion: Enable, source = this controller
05

Optional: enable motion via DSU for wireless

If your controller does not expose gyro directly over Bluetooth, install a DSU server (BetterJoy for Switch Pro, DualSenseX or similar for DualSense). Start the DSU server, then in Cemu set the motion source to **DSUController** and point it at **127.0.0.1:26760**.

Controller API: DSUController
IP: 127.0.0.1
Port: 26760
06

Check compatibility and physical fit

Make sure your Wii U key files (**keys.txt**) are in Cemu's folder before loading any game. Confirm your dumped game folder structure (**code/**, **content/**, **meta/**) is intact. Confirm the controller is on a current firmware - DualSense and Pro Controller both get stability updates.

⚠ warningKeep your legal dump and keys offline. Public key dumps are copyrighted and sharing them is piracy.
Troubleshooting

Common issues

Game crashes on launch with Vulkan

Update your GPU driver via NVIDIA App or AMD Adrenalin. Older Vulkan drivers mishandle Cemu's shader pipeline.

Motion does not react in Splatoon / Zelda

Motion is enabled per-profile. Open Input settings for that game's profile and confirm Motion source points to your controller or 127.0.0.1 if you use DSU.

Severe stutter the first time I play

Shader cache is building. Let the game run through the opening area once; subsequent sessions use the cache and run smoothly.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does Cemu still need Cemuhook?

No. Current Cemu builds integrate most Cemuhook features natively.

Is OpenGL still worth using?

No. The Vulkan backend is faster and better maintained in current builds.

Can I use an Xbox controller for motion?

No, Xbox controllers have no gyro. Use DualSense, DualShock 4 or Switch Pro.

How to undo this

To undo, close Cemu and delete its folder. All settings live in that folder, so removing it uninstalls Cemu completely. Uninstall any DSU server you installed from Settings > Apps.
