Instructions

Install PCSX2

Download the **PCSX2 Nightly** Windows installer from https://pcsx2.net/downloads and run it. Pick **Install for me only** and let it place shortcuts. On first launch, choose **Portable** or **User** mode - User mode stores config in your Documents folder.

tipNightly is where active development lives and is stable enough for daily use. The old 1.6 stable is outdated.

Add your legally dumped BIOS

Dump the BIOS from your own PS2 following https://pcsx2.net/docs/setup/bios. Copy the resulting files (e.g. SCPH-70012.bin, SCPH-70012.nvm) into the PCSX2 bios folder. The default User-mode path is below.

Run the first-time setup wizard

Launch **PCSX2**. The wizard scans the bios folder and lists your BIOS. Pick it, confirm the languages, and finish. If no BIOS appears, click **Open in Explorer** and verify the files are in the right folder.

Add your game library folder

In PCSX2 go to **Settings** then **Game List** then **Add** and point it at the folder containing your **ISO** or **CHD** files. The grid view fills in with cover art once scanning finishes.

Map your controller

Open **Settings** then **Controllers**. Pick **Controller Port 1**, set **Type** to **DualShock 2** and click **Automatic Mapping**. Select your connected pad from the list. The buttons autofill.

Tune graphics for your GPU

Go to **Settings** then **Graphics**. Set **Renderer** to **Direct3D 12** or **Vulkan**. Set **Internal Resolution** to **3x Native (1080p)** for mid-range GPUs, **4x-6x** for modern ones. Leave **Blending Accuracy** at **Basic**.

⚠ warningPushing resolution past 6x on games with heavy shaders can tank FPS even on a 4080. Scale up gradually.

Launch and verify

Double-click a game in the grid. It should boot straight into the title screen at full speed (around 60 FPS NTSC, 50 FPS PAL). The on-screen overlay shows FPS and speed % in the top-right.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

No BIOS files found

Confirm files are directly inside the bios folder (not inside a subfolder) and have .bin or .rom extensions. Restart PCSX2.

Game runs at 50% speed

In Settings then Emulation, enable MTVU (Multi-Threaded VU1). Also update GPU drivers and switch renderer to Vulkan.

Controller is detected but buttons do nothing

Close Steam Input or disable Steam's controller handling for non-Steam games - it hijacks the pad before PCSX2 sees it.

Graphical glitches on a specific game

In the game's right-click Properties then Game Fixes, enable Automatic Game Fixes. PCSX2 has per-game patches for known issues.
