Set up per-game TDP profiles on a Windows handheld

Cap wattage per title on a Windows handheld to extend battery life and keep the fan quiet without hurting framerate where it matters.

⚠ Safety notice

Changing TDP and fan profiles is safe within the vendor overlay. Third-party undervolting or power tuners may void warranty or require a BIOS reset to recover.

TL;DR

Use your handheld's **vendor overlay** (Armoury Crate SE, Legion Space, Claw Center) to create a **per-game TDP profile**. Target **15 W** for AAA, **8-10 W** for indies, **5-7 W** for 2D.

Before you start

Requirements

  • A Windows 11 handheld (ROG Ally, Legion Go, MSI Claw or similar)
  • The vendor's overlay app installed and current
  • A battery meter you trust (vendor overlay or HWInfo)
Step by step

Instructions

01

Pick the right TDP tier per game class

Match wattage to the game, not to the handheld. These three brackets cover almost every title.

Budget tier:     2D / indie / emulators       -> 5-7 W TDP
Sweet spot: Older AAA, Switch-era ports -> 8-12 W TDP
No-compromise:   Modern AAA / UE5 games        -> 15-25 W TDP (shortest battery)
02

What actually matters on a handheld APU

TDP, RAM speed and refresh rate decide battery life more than any graphics preset. Marketing specs - 'AI gaming', 'Game Mode AI' - rarely move the needle.

Matters: TDP cap, RAM speed (LPDDR5X), display refresh rate, resolution scale
Marketing: 'AI performance', vendor-branded presets, FSR 'quality' auto-switch
⚠ warningLowering refresh rate from 120 Hz to 60 Hz often saves more battery than lowering TDP by 2 W.
03

Mini comparison of per-game profile tools

Three realistic options depending on your device.

Option | Good for | Why
-----------------------|--------------------------|------------------------
Vendor overlay only | Any handheld | Supported, no risk
Vendor overlay + RTSS | Fine framerate caps | Pair TDP with FPS cap
Third-party tuner | Advanced users | More risk, voids some warranties
04

Create the per-game profile

Open your vendor overlay (press the dedicated button on the device). Add the game to the library, then open its profile settings. Set the TDP cap for the chosen tier, enable the overlay's framerate limiter (match the display: 40, 60 or 90 Hz), and set resolution scale to 85-100% depending on the game.

ROG Ally: Armoury Crate SE -> Game profile -> Operating Mode -> Manual -> TDP
Legion Go: Legion Space -> Game profile -> TDP + FPS cap
MSI Claw: MSI Center M -> Gaming mode -> AI engine OFF -> Manual TDP
tipLock the TDP in both 'TDP SPL' and 'Sustained' fields - handhelds boost briefly above the main cap by default.
05

Verify battery and thermal behaviour

Launch the game and watch the overlay for 10 minutes. Fan should settle, SoC temperature should stay under about 90 C, and battery drain should match your target. If frame-time is unstable, bump TDP up 2 W; if battery drops too fast, drop refresh rate before dropping TDP further.

06

What to skip

Skip undervolting unless you accept the risk - some vendors have locked it and reversing it needs a BIOS reset. Skip "AI" auto-TDP modes for games with wildly different scenes (open world, loading screens); they oscillate and waste battery. Skip buying a second battery or external power bank purely to run modern AAA at 25 W - a sensible TDP profile usually makes a built-in battery enough.

⚠ warningDo not run 25-30 W sustained on battery for long periods: the APU and VRMs reach their thermal limit and performance drops anyway.
Troubleshooting

Common issues

TDP cap is ignored and wattage spikes

The game is using a different profile than the one you edited. Confirm you added the correct executable to the vendor overlay.

Framerate feels worse at 15 W than at 10 W

Your TDP is below the GPU's efficient point for that game. Raise to 15 W or lower resolution scale instead.

Fan runs loud at low TDP

Vendor fan curve is static. Switch the device to 'Silent' or 'Quiet' profile for that game; many overlays let you pair fan profile with TDP.

FAQ

Frequently asked

What about SteamOS style per-game TDP?

On Windows, the vendor overlay is the equivalent. SteamOS is only an option if you dual-boot Linux on supported handhelds.

Does lowering TDP hurt the APU?

No. Running cooler and at lower voltage is better for silicon longevity.

Should I disable Turbo in Windows?

Not necessary. The vendor TDP cap already limits sustained power; Windows power plan has little extra effect.

How to undo this

Open your vendor overlay, select each game profile and choose 'Reset to default' or set TDP back to the device's stock performance preset. Reboot to clear any residual power limits.
