Set Up ScummVM for Classic Adventure Games

Point-and-click classics run on a modern PC in minutes, but the music, the aspect ratio and the save folders each need one decision.

by@guidox updated:10/31/26 time:25 min level:Beginner tested on:Windows 11 24H2, ScummVM 2.9 works on:Windows 10, Windows 11, Linux, macOS tools:ScummVM
TL;DR

Add the **game folder** rather than a single file, enable **aspect correction** with integer scaling, and pick the **music device** the game was written for. Saves go to a folder you choose.

Before you start

Requirements

  • ScummVM
  • Your own game files
  • A save folder
Step by step

Instructions

01

Add the folder, not the file

ScummVM detects the engine from the data files in a directory. Add the whole folder and it names the game; pointing at one file only works for a handful of titles.

Add Game > Choose the game directory
⚠ warningDo not add a folder inside a mounted ISO or a ZIP. The paths break as soon as the archive is closed.
02

Fix the geometry once

These games were drawn for 320x200 on a 4:3 screen. Aspect correction plus integer scaling keeps the pixels square and the circles round; stretching to 16:9 turns every character into a wide one.

Options > Graphics > Aspect ratio correction
tipAdd a subtle CRT filter or a scanline overlay only if you like it. It hides the pixel grid without changing the geometry.
03

Choose the right music device

A game written for AdLib sounds wrong on a General MIDI device and the reverse is true as well. The audio tab lists what the engine supports; pick the one the release was made for.

Options > Audio > Music driver
04

Point the saves somewhere permanent

The default save path lives in the ScummVM folder, which is replaced during an update. Set a folder outside it, and enable the cloud save directory if you use more than one machine.

Options > Paths > Save path
05

Add the CD audio tracks

Releases with a soundtrack expect tracks next to the data files, named after the game. Convert them to OGG once and ScummVM picks them up without a virtual drive.

track1.ogg, track2.ogg ... next to the game data
06

Learn three keys and stop using menus

The in-game menu, the global menu and fullscreen cover almost every interaction. Reaching for the mouse to open a menu during a puzzle is the fastest way to lose the thread.

F5 in-game menu
Ctrl+F5 global menu
Alt+Enter fullscreen
Troubleshooting

Common issues

The game is not detected

The folder is one level too deep or too shallow, or a required data file is missing. Select the folder that holds the files directly.

There is music but no voices

A floppy release, or the speech files are missing. Check the game's folder against the file list in its documentation.

The MIDI soundtrack sounds thin

The default device is a basic synthesiser. Select a SoundFont-based driver or the device the release was written for.

The game runs too fast

The engine detects the speed wrongly on modern hardware. Set the speed in the game options or the engine's own settings tab.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does it need the original CDs?

No, only the data files. The copy you own is enough, mounted or copied to the disk.

Can I use a controller?

For the cursor, yes, but these games were made for a mouse. A trackball is the period-correct answer.

How to undo this

Remove the game from the list and delete the ScummVM configuration folder if you want a clean start. Game files and your save folder are untouched.
