Set Up Sticky Keys and Filter Keys Without Accidental Toggles

Accessibility shortcuts are useful and easy to trigger by accident during a game. Windows has a switch that stops the surprise prompts.

TL;DR

Enable **Sticky Keys** and **Filter Keys** in the accessibility settings, then turn off the **shortcut** that enables them with five Shift presses.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Windows 11
  • Ten minutes
Step by step

Instructions

01

Decide what you actually need

Sticky Keys holds a modifier after you release it, which helps one-handed typing. Filter Keys ignores short or repeated keystrokes, which helps a shaky hand.

Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard
02

Configure the behaviour, not only the toggle

Each feature has options: lock a modifier with two presses, show the state in the taskbar, or set the delay that Filter Keys uses. The defaults are rarely right.

tipTurn on the taskbar indicator for Sticky Keys. A held Ctrl that no longer releases explains a lot of confusing behaviour.
03

Disable the five-press shortcut

Holding Shift for eight seconds or pressing it five times triggers the prompt. Games and fast typing hit both by accident, and the prompt steals focus.

Control Panel > Ease of Access Center > Set up Sticky Keys
⚠ warningTurning the shortcut off does not disable the feature. You can still switch it on from the settings page.
04

Set the Filter Keys delay deliberately

A short delay rejects fast typing; a long one makes the keyboard feel broken. Test with a sentence you type every day before keeping it.

05

Keep the toggle shortcut for what you use

Filter Keys has its own shortcut, a long press of the right Shift. If you never toggle on purpose, disable that one as well.

06

Verify in a game and in a document

Hold Shift for ten seconds in a text editor and press Ctrl repeatedly in a game. No prompt should appear in either case.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

A prompt still appears

The other feature's shortcut is still active. Both Ease of Access pages have one.

The keyboard ignores fast typing

Filter Keys is on with a long delay. Turn it off or shorten the delay.

Modifiers stay stuck

Sticky Keys is locked. Press the modifier twice or turn the feature off.

Settings do not survive a reboot

A policy or a reset profile. Reapply and check the sign-in state.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Does this affect the on-screen keyboard?

No. It only changes how physical modifier keys are interpreted.

Can I keep the feature and hide the prompt?

Yes. Turning off the shortcut keeps the feature available from settings.

How to undo this

Re-enable the shortcuts on both Ease of Access pages and switch the features off in the accessibility settings. The default behaviour returns.
