Set Up Touchpad Gestures on a Precision Touchpad

A precision touchpad supports three- and four-finger gestures without third-party drivers. The settings are hidden until Windows recognises the hardware.

TL;DR

Open **Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad** and assign the **three-finger** and **four-finger** gestures. If the page only shows basic options, the touchpad is not a precision device.

Step by step

Instructions

01

Check whether the hardware qualifies

The touchpad page shows gesture settings only for a precision touchpad, which reports itself through a standard interface. A Synaptics or Elan device without that support falls back to the vendor's control panel.

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad
02

Assign the three-finger tap

The default opens search. Middle click, task view and a custom shortcut are the alternatives, and middle click is what most people want after a week.

tipMiddle click from a three-finger tap makes a laptop usable for opening links in a new tab.
03

Assign the swipe directions

Each direction takes a separate action: switch apps, switch desktops or control media. Swipes conflict with a browser's own gesture only inside that browser.

04

Tune the sensitivity before the gestures

A cursor that jumps makes every gesture feel broken. Set the cursor speed in the middle of the range and enable tap-to-click only if you actually use it.

05

Deal with palm rejection

Typing that moves the cursor means the palm rejection is too weak. The vendor control panel usually has a sensitivity slider the Windows page does not expose.

⚠ warningA touchpad that stops working entirely after a driver update usually needs the vendor package reinstalled, not a Windows setting.
06

Test each gesture once

Try the three-finger tap, both four-finger swipes and the two-finger scroll in one sitting. A gesture that fails alone is an assignment problem, not a hardware fault.

Troubleshooting

Common issues

The gesture section is missing

Not a precision touchpad. Use the vendor control panel or accept the basic options.

Gestures stopped after an update

Reinstall the vendor driver, then recheck the settings page.

Scrolling is inverted

The scroll direction toggle on the same page. It applies per user.

The cursor moves while typing

Palm rejection. Raise it in the vendor panel if one exists.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Can I add a fifth gesture?

Not in Windows. A gesture tool is needed for anything beyond four fingers.

Do gestures work with an external trackpad?

Yes for a precision device over Bluetooth or USB.

How to undo this

Set every gesture back to its default and clear the custom shortcuts on the touchpad page. The stock behaviour returns.
