TL;DR

Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, ensure the taskbar clock is visible, and enable Show seconds in system tray clock.

Before you start

Requirements

  • Windows 11.
  • Access to date and time settings.
  • A visible Windows taskbar.
Step by step

Instructions

01

Check the taskbar clock

Look at the right side of the Windows 11 taskbar. Confirm that the clock currently displays hours and minutes. If the clock is completely hidden, it must be enabled before seconds can be displayed.

02

Open date and time settings

Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time. Locate the options controlling how Windows displays the clock in the system tray. These settings affect the taskbar clock without changing the actual system time.

03

Enable the system tray clock

Find Show time and date in the System tray and set it to On. The taskbar should display the clock and date if they were previously hidden. Keep this option enabled to make the seconds setting available.

04

Enable seconds display

Find Show seconds in system tray clock (uses more power). Turn the option On and return to the desktop. The taskbar clock should now show seconds alongside the normal time.

05

Verify the clock updates

Watch the system tray clock for several seconds. Confirm that the seconds value changes continuously without opening the calendar or clock application. The setting is active if the updated clock appears directly in the taskbar.

⚠ warningMicrosoft notes that showing seconds in the system tray clock uses more power. Consider leaving it disabled on battery-powered devices when maximum battery life matters.
